Beginner Backpacking Gear List 2026
Affordable gear that works from the very first trip.

When starting to backpack, it is easy to make mistakes with gear choice and waste a lot of money. It takes a few trips to learn which features you care about and it makes sense to do that learning with affordable gear; which is why this beginner backpacking gear list is not only approachable when it comes to performance but also affordable. A few items on this list cost a little more, but they are good enough to buy right away and keep for years. This is the gear for someone just getting into backpacking or for an experienced backpacker who wants to get back to basics.
The Priorities
| 1 | Affordable. Learn what you like before spending big. |
| 2 | Intuitive. Gear that is easy to set up and use on the first trip. |
| 3 | Comfortable. A pack that carries well and a sleep system that stays warm and sleeps comfortably. |
| 4 | Worth keeping. A few items cost more but are good enough to use for years. |
TOTAL KIT WEIGHT 6.3 kg (13.9 lb)
The Big 3
The pack, tent, and sleep system are the items to spend the most time thinking about with backpacking gear; they make up most of the weight in the pack and most of the cost of the kit. For a beginner, the goal is gear that fits well, sets up without surprises, and keeps you warm and comfortable through the night. Saving weight comes later, once you know what you like.
Decathlon MT100 Easyfit 50 L Pack
Advantages
- ✓An adjustable torso that provides excellent fit for most people.
- ✓Carries loads over 20 kg (44.1 lb) comfortably.
- ✓Very durable construction.
- ✓50 L of space, enough for a full beginner kit.
- ✓A side water bottle pocket that is easy to reach while walking.
Compromises
- −Heavy for its size. Lighter packs exist at the same price, but they give up the adjustable torso and most of the features.
- −No big stretchy front pocket for rain gear.
- −Only one water bottle pocket.
Fit is what puts this pack on the list. Getting a good fit for a pack is difficult and the MT100 adjusts to fit almost anyone. The pack also solves the most common beginner problem, which is water bottle storage that cannot be reached without help. The MT100 water bottle pocket is very easy to use.
Naturehike Mongar 2 Tent
Advantages
- ✓Spacious for two people. Wide enough for two 63.5 cm (25 in) width rectangular shaped sleeping pads side by side.
- ✓Double wall and fully freestanding, so setup is intuitive and easy.
- ✓A polyester fly that does not sag or stretch when it gets wet.
- ✓Fairly durable.
Compromises
- −Bulky when packed, even with the poles left out.
- −Not the lightest option out there.
Easy is what earns the Mongar 2 its place. A 2-person freestanding double wall tent that is easy to set up and roomy enough for two people (which is not always the case with tents advertised as being 2-person tents). Anyone who wants to go lighter should look at the 3F UL Gear Lanshan 2 or the 3F UL Gear Lanshan 1 Pro. Both are trekking pole tents and take a little getting used to, but they become quick and intuitive after a few times setting them up.
Bestway Ridgelite Sleeping Pad
Advantages
- ✓Reflective film insulation allows the pad to sleep warm below freezing on cold ground.
- ✓Dimpled baffles act like small springs for excellent pressure relief.
- ✓Very compact when packed.
Compromises
- −A little thin for people over about 90 kg (198.4 lb), who may bottom out the pad and touch the ground.
One of the best pads on the market and a great choice for beginner and experienced kits alike. Get the wide version and inflate it to be firm; usually deflating a pad slightly improves pressure relief, but the Ridgelite baffling is most comfortable when the pad is firmly inflated.
Trekology Aluft 2.0 Pillow
Advantages
- ✓A strap that wraps around the sleeping pad keeps the pillow in place through the night.
- ✓A soft, stretchy top that is supportive and comfortable to lay on.
Compromises
- −A little thin for side sleepers with broad shoulders.
- −Manufacturing defects are common but Trekology will replace a defective pillow.
A pillow does more for sleep than most beginners expect. It keeps the neck straight and takes pressure off the shoulder. The strap is what sets the Trekology 2.0 apart; without one, every shift in the night can send the pillow sliding off the pad. Anyone who finds it too thin can put a sit pad, some clothing, or even a pair of shoes under it to increase the height.
Kelty Cosmic 20 Sleeping Bag
Advantages
- ✓A sleeping bag is intuitive. Get in and zip up.
- ✓Most people will be warm down to freezing or slightly below.
- ✓Down fill packs small.
- ✓Affordable for a down bag.
Compromises
- −Not the lightest, even with down fill.
- −Not the warmest for its weight.
Most people are comfortable with a sleeping bag as their first piece of top insulation, and that is why the Cosmic 20 is the pick. Anyone willing to try something new should look at the Neve Waratah quilt instead. It costs about the same, weighs about half as much, packs smaller, and is a little warmer. A quilt also lets you shift positions without getting tangled up - like sleeping under a blanket at home.
Cook & Water
Some gear can be whatever is on hand; for example, any 1 L (33.8 fl oz) bottle from a gas station works for water. A cook system is different and, if poorly chosen, adds unnecessary weight to a kit and can be frustrating to use. The goal here is a small set of pieces that nest together, runs on fuel that is easy to find, and boils water quickly with little effort.
Titanium Long Handle Spoon
Advantages
- ✓Very light.
- ✓The long handle reaches the bottom of a freeze-dried meal bag.
- ✓Inexpensive.
Freeze-dried meals are the easiest food for a first trip and a long handle spoon is an inexpensive and effective option. The pink ones are the best. If you know, you know.
Fire Maple Petrel G3 Pot and Greenpeak Stove
Advantages
- ✓The whole cook system nests inside the pot.
- ✓A heat exchanger on the pot captures heat from the stove and shields the flame from wind.
- ✓The stove slides into three grooves on the pot, so the burner sits up inside the base for even better wind protection and fuel efficiency.
- ✓A wide burner with a lip, three pot arms, and a piezo igniter that has been reliable.
- ✓Runs on isobutane, which is easy to find almost anywhere and keeps working below freezing.
Compromises
- −Not the best pot if you like to cook inside the pot. Best for just boiling water.
- −600 ml (20.3 fl oz) can be too little capacity if multiple people are sharing the cook kit.
Compact, easy to use, and affordable - this pair is the whole cook system for this kit. Even though the stove has a piezo ignitor, always pack a backup lighter. No piezo igniter works every single time and nobody wants to be in the backcountry with no way to make fire. Get the Fire Maple Petrel G2 Pot if you need more capacity.
HydroBlu Versa Flow Filter and CNOC Vecto 2L Water Bladder
Advantages
- ✓Light, affordable, and easy to use system for filtering water.
- ✓Caps on both ends of the filter keep it from leaking in the pack.
- ✓The bag has a wide opening for scooping water from a stream and a narrow end that screws onto the filter.
- ✓Squeeze the bag and clean water comes out the other side of the filter.
Compromises
- −The filter must never freeze. On cold nights it goes inside the sleeping bag.
- −Only treats bacteria and protozoa. Does not filter out viruses.
One of the lightest, cheapest, and quickest ways to treat water in the backcountry. Any dirty water container can attach to the in end of the filter, but the CNOC Vecto 2L is the perfect pairing. Fill the bag from a lake or stream, screw on the filter, and squeeze.
Clothing
Most clothing can come from what is already in the closet but two pieces are worth buying for backpacking. Rain gear made for the trail is far lighter and more compact than rain gear made for town and a lightweight down jacket keeps camp comfortable once the sun goes down while also being light and compact.
Frogg Toggs Ultra-Lite2 Rain Suit
Advantages
- ✓Far lighter and more compact than rain gear made for town.
- ✓A jacket and pants set, so the legs stay dry too.
- ✓Does not wet out like jackets that rely on a durable water repellent (DWR) coating.
Compromises
- −Not durable, so not the right choice for trips with a lot of bushwhacking.
Rain gear from home works but it is heavy and bulky in a pack. This set is the easy answer for a beginner. It is inexpensive, it weighs very little, and it just works. Most beginners are not bushwhacking, so the thin fabric is a fair trade.
Decathlon MT100 Down Jacket
Advantages
- ✓Warm down to about freezing and a little below with a fleece underneath.
- ✓Compact and light, since it is filled with down for insulation.
- ✓Few jackets at any price come close on specs.
This has been the go-to down jacket recommendation for years - for beginners and experienced backpackers alike. It is the layer that goes on around the fire or while sitting with friends once the walking is done. It also comes in a women's version.
The Bottom Line
That is the whole beginner kit. None of it costs a lot and all of it works. The pack fits, the tent sets up without surprises, the sleep system stays warm, and the cook and water systems take minutes to learn. Use it for a few seasons, learn what matters most to you, and then decide where it is worth spending more to maybe save some weight or improve functionality. Some of the kit, like the pad and the down jacket, may never need replacing.
