Flextail Tiny R05
Affordable pad that hits all the marks?
Flextail has been working on sleeping pads for several years, but the Tiny R05 is the best pad I have tested from them so far. It has an R-value of 5.6 thanks to two layers of reflective film, is 10.2 cm (4 in) thick, and is advertised as weighing 545 g (1.2 lb). What makes the Tiny R05 interesting is that it looks like an identical design to the popular and highly rated Nemo Eclipse (see review). Since the Tiny R05 is a lower price, it would be an amazing pad option if performance is comparable to the Nemo Eclipse. I have had one night of testing on the Tiny R05 so far on cold ground and with an overnight low of 3°C (37°F). It was a good test of the pad but I definitely still have some questions.
Pros and Cons
Pros
- Slightly dimpled vertical baffles provide excellent pressure relief.
- Very stable, even when deflated for added pressure relief.
- Warm down to freezing on cold ground.
- Easy to use valve on top of the pad for easy inflation and adjustment.
- Lightweight for the warmth and comfort.
Cons
- Heavier than advertised by 40 g (1.4 oz).
- Only one size available. I would prefer a regular wide size.
- Contradictory specifications on the Flextail website (e.g., weights and thicknesses).
- Unclear if R-value is lab tested to the ASTM standard.
Open Questions
What the full review still needs to answer.
- Can it sleep warm in colder conditions? Ideally it could sleep warm at -4°C (25°F) on cold ground.
- How is long-term durability?
- How does comfort compare side-by-side to similar pads like the Nemo Eclipse and Paria Elevate?
